What Are SAHP?
In a nutshell, SAHP, stands for Solar Assisted Heat Pumps.
An SAHP is a machine that combines a heat pump, thermal solar panels and/or PV solar panels in a single integrated system. Once upon a time, these two systems ran separately, but in more recent times, it has been popular to create a hybrid of the two. The solar panels collect and transfer the solar-generated heat – from the sunlight and the air – to the heat pump, which, in turn, efficiently heats your home or business. The more heat your heat pump can take from direct sunlight, the less electricity it will need to use, which will lower your running costs.
Unlike other heat pumps, the SAHP range keeps efficiencies high and running costs low.
Benefits of Having a SAHP:
- An efficient, cost-effective addition to electric heat systems
- Delivers more energy than they consume
- Keeps efficiency high and running costs low
- Lower carbon footprint
- Improved EPC rating and desirability of your home
- Fewer parts, meaning more reliability and less maintenance compared to a hot water heating system
SAHP – How They Work (in simple terms…or so we hope)
A SAHP can be best described as ‘a fridge in reverse’. Most people understand that the panel on the back of their fridge is a vital factor in keeping its contents cold. Reversing this principle by using an aluminium evaporator panel to absorb heat rather than reject heat allows us to utilise the ambient air temperature (day and night, all year) to change the refrigerant liquid circulating through the panel from a liquid state to a gaseous state. The returning refrigerant, now heated and in a gaseous state, is then compressed and heated further. The compressed refrigerant is then passed through a heat exchanger, where the heat is transferred to the water, heating it up.
The requirement to reduce energy bills and carbon emissions is driving the demand for alternative forms of water heating. SAHP not only runs on electricity but delivers more energy than they consume. This makes solar-assisted heat pumps an efficient, cost-effective addition to electric heat systems.
SAHP are non-toxic, non-hazardous, and non-flammable and every component can be fully re-used or recycled at end-of-life. It’s all about doing what we can for our planet.
