Case Study:
Mr & Mrs F bought their charming Cambridgeshire house a year ago and had planned to improve and modernise most aspects. First on the list was to replace the ageing oil fired heating system with something environmentally friendly. Our team removed the existing fossil fuel boiler and fitted a 14kW Mitsubishi heat pump to provide all the heating and hot water demands of the property. Along with the heat pump installation, we replaced several radiators to meet the heat loss requirements.
Next up was to tackle the roof. The parapet wall to the front elevation of the property was causing serious leaks through the existing lead flashing which had been fixed many times over the years so the client decided to take this down and have a more traditional cable end finish.
The client was looking to have an in roof solar system to keep the panels as low profile as possible but when we took off the existing concrete tiles a lot of the existing battens and felt were in a really poor condition so once we discussed options with the client we ended up re-felting and battening across all main roofs.
Once we re-felted and battened each roof we were ready for the solar photovoltaic system to be installed. Once the counter battening was fitted, the solar trays were screwed down before the roofer completed the roof tile works. The client at this stage opted to install slate tiles back on instead of the old ones as he thought this would be a better finish and had planned to do the garage roof at a later date. Once the roofer had finished his work we would then come back to drop in the solar panels and fix them securely.
Our solar team fitted a 10.7kW in-roof solar system over 4 roofs using 14 Eurener 400w panels on the back elevation and 15 Eurener 340w panels to the front elevation, along with a 10kW SolarEdge inverter.
As there is shading over the roofs during the day (depending on the position of the sun) and the panels were fitted on different roofs, we fitted SolarEdge optimisers for maximum efficiency.
Currently we have a Solar Iboost installed to give the clients hot water through this immersion controller while we wait for the Solar Edge version to come into stock and I am glad to say since this has been installed this has given the clients free hot water for a family of five meaning the heat pump is not running which again is a big saving across the warmer months.
We will soon be fitting a single 10kW SolarEdge battery for Mr & Mrs F which will store excess electricity generated by their solar system. The stored energy will contribute towards the running costs of their air source heat pump and can be used during the evenings to power electrical appliances such as their cooker, fridge freezer, washing machine etc.
An installation like this takes approximately two to three weeks to complete. At the end of the installation, Mr & Mrs were able to apply for the Smart Export Guarantee tariff (SEG) by contacting their energy supplier.
Mr & Mrs F are delighted with their solar installation and looking forward to making the most of the summer sun whilst receiving cheaper energy bills.
Testimonial:
Eco Installer visited our property to discuss our requirements which were to replace the oil central heating system with something environmentally friendly, and to install a large solar PV system.
Our house was built in 1911 and has been extended over the years, we were slightly concerned a heat pump might not be suitable, however I was pleased the heat loss calculations and design showed a 14kW Mitsubishi heat pump would comfortably meet our families demands. We have had the heat pump installed for just over 18 months, and it has been fantastic, even during the snowy period just before Christmas. It is so lovely not having to worry about ordering oil or the increase in oil prices.
The roof works and solar installation went smoothly even with the changes on the way and the unsettled weather we have been experiencing lately. The solar panels and new roof tiles have transformed our house and our neighbours are already looking to do a similar installation. Thank you to all at Eco Installer. We will certainly be recommending you. Mr & Mrs F
