What is the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS)?
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme launched in April 2022 to aid the decarbonisation of buildings. The BUS provides upfront capital grants to support the installation of heat pumps in homes and some non-domestic buildings.
How much can I receive from the BUS?
You can receive £7,500 towards the installation of your air and ground source heat pump.
What are the Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) Requirements for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme?
To ensure installations are only undertaken in properties appropriate for low carbon heat technologies, a valid EPC – meaning one which is less than 10 years old must be provided.
It is no longer a requirement to have an EPC without any recommendations for loft or cavity wall insulation, however, it is recommended to insulate your house as much as possible.
How does the Boiler Upgrade Scheme work and how do I apply?
The application process is installer lead (meaning very little admin for the homeowner). Once your voucher has been approved, the works must be completed by an MCS approved installer (like Eco Installer) within 3 months.
Are bivalent and hybrid system included in the Boiler Upgrade Scheme?
No, the BUS does not include hybrid systems as the funding is directed towards the technologies that offer the greatest carbon savings, rather than those which would continue the burning of fossil fuels for heating.
What is the minimum SCOP for a heat pump being installed under the Boiler Upgrade Scheme?
The minimum SCOP will be 2.8.
Are custom-build/self build’s and private landlord’s included within the boiler upgrade scheme?

I have an air source what pump, can I apply for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme?
The BUS is targeted at phasing out fossil fuel heating in existing buildings. As such, with the exception of custom-build properties, heat pumps will only be eligible where they replace an existing fossil fuel or direct electric heating system. Replacements of previously installed renewable technologies will NOT be eligible.
Am I eligible for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme?
If you are replacing your existing gas, oil or electric boiler, or building a custom-build property then yes you are!
