A couple of weeks ago, we talked about going green, about Eco priorities and ridiculous resolutions. We also talked about the impact of fossil fuels on the environment and we were all moved to action, right?
So. Today, I wanted to explore a little more about how we can change the world, right here in Cambridgeshire.
In March, Philip Hammond, our then Chancellor of the Exchequer, said that by 2025, fossil fuel boilers will be banned from new build properties. It’s exciting to see in real time, the country taking huge strides away from fossil fuels, but what’s the alternative to the gas central heating that we all know and love?
You’ve heard of pumping iron, but how about pumping heat? A great energy alternative, though granted, it might not do much for your six pack, BUT DON’T LET THAT STOP YOU!
If you HAVE heard of heat pump technology, do you know how it works, and how it could work in your home?
I didn’t either.
If the Eco Experts out there could just bear with me, I’ll explain for the Eco Amateurs, like myself.
In the traditional boiler you have at home, a carbon- based fuel (ie. gas or oil) is channelled into a combustion chamber through lots of small jets (mercifully, not the RyanAir kind), and is lit by an electrical ignition and burned with oxygen to heat your water. The carbon dioxide is a waste product of this and is released into the atmosphere through a little flue on the side of your house, contributing, little by little to the country’s carbon footprint, and the worldwide fossil fuel problem.
Heat pump technology works differently. Rather than burning fuel, it draws its energy from the ambient air or the ground around your home, imparts this to a refrigerant system, condenses it, squeezing out more heat before channeling it back in to heat your home and hot water.
Sounds a bit clever, doesn’t it? And it is.
But, with the 2025 ban, you owners of NOT-new-build homes don’t have to be left behind! Did you know that you could get a hybrid heat pump, especially designed to work with your existing pipes and radiators? That means minimal disruption to you and your home, whilst ensuring a huge difference in your personal carbon footprint. Did you also know that if you had a heat pump installed, you would qualify for the government’s Renewable Heat Incentive, which COULD end up reimbursing you in full for your investment? What’s more, if you choose a renewable energy provider like Bulb, you’ll be pretty much 100% fossil fuel free, and I think that’ll feel A M A Z I N G. Suddenly, you being fossil fuel free seems a lot more doable than your no-carbs promise in January, doesn’t it?
